Top 3 Organizing Sins

Just what is it that prevents well-intentioned people from getting a handle on belongings and finally getting organized?   How come they want to get organized but just can’t seem to make it happen?  As a professional organizer, let me share with you where I see things take a turn for the worse.  Let’s take a look at the top three organizing sins.

Organizing Sin # 1 – Not having clear goals and a vision for how you want to use your space.

Before you even start on a project, you have to think about how you want to use the space.  Sit down with paper and pencil and write down what types of activities you want to do in that room or what type of storage you need in the space.  When you know what you want to accomplish there, it will help you to know what needs to stay and what needs to take a hike!

Organizing Sin # 2 – Purchasing organizing supplies and storage bins first.

It’s very tempting to go shopping first because it’s the fun part.  It’s very important that you save your shopping for the end of the process-think of it as a treat for a job well done!  You really have to go through your belongings and decide what to keep and what to part with first.  Once you know what you will be keeping, then you will know what size products you need to purchase.  Be sure to measure your space before heading to the store too!

Organizing Sin # 3 – Not placing items closest to where you will use them.

I’ve seen people keep their filing cabinet out in the garage but all of their paperwork in the house in their office.  If you have to go that far to file, guess what?  It’s not going to happen!  No matter what room in the house you are working in, be sure to place belongings as close to where you will use them as possible.  As an example, at your desk be sure to keep papers you are working on and office supplies within arm’s reach.  Keep computer paper near the computer.  Keep mailing labels, return address labels and stamps together.
